The work is comprised of the personal websites of five Speculative Identities – ‘characters’ developed entirely by generative code and AI text completion models. This project was completed as part of the UTS Design Honours program. Sites at the Edge of the World sought to question current paradigms by applying new ideologies to contemporary technologies, and contribute to our understanding of the practice by centering personal introspection rather than prescribed critique as the desired outcome of Speculative Designs. https://sophiefrench.com.au/FELLR-Free Sat, 26 Nov 2022 01:01:40 +0000 Sophie French https://sophiefrench.com.au/FELLR-Free FELLR Free 2022 When FELLR launched their non-alcoholic offering mid 2022 the goal was to create a premium product that met the shifting desires of their consumers. Using their signature brewed base the cans weren’t just repackaged sparkling water but a uniquely FELLR drinking experience designed to open the brand back up to its audience who were cutting back on alcohol consumption. With this in mind we launched FELLR FREE under the campaign ‘the same fizz without the fuzz’. This copy provided a visual metaphor of crisp sensory imagery emerging from a diffused haze which was expressed in 3D animations across socials and Google Ads. Media kits were then designed with frosted perspex to translate the transition from fizz to fuzz into a physical experience for the consumer. Here the pair disconnected from the distractions of everyday life and found a refreshed way to create. The project aimed to make FELLR feel just as at home in the natural landscape as the artists it followed, utilising the textures and colours of the Snowy Mountains to celebrate the cans. Hero shots were used in diptychs across OOH placements and street posters. The tag line ‘Welcome to a Land of Fizz’ invited passers-by into FELLR’s world, reigniting a passion for the land we live on. Elliott Routledge and Matt Cherubino ventured into the Worimi Conservation Lands, using its backdrop of sand, sea, and sky to transform Elliott’s sculpture. Under Matt’s direction the alien-like monument became a fixture of the landscape that fell into contrast and harmony in equal measure. The campaign sought to deepen the connection between the brand and the landscape it was born from. Product photography took cues from the sculpture by stacking up high and nestling amongst the Worimi dunes. The publication explores the phenomenon of synesthesia – particularly the subjective correlation between colour and abstract concepts like days of the week – as a means of ordering and sensemaking. The publication’s centerpiece is an extract from Vladimir Nabokov’s memoir Speak, Memory detailing his experience with synesthesia. The design was informed by Stream’s primary function of ‘clearing things up’, using the obfuscation of typography and a fuzzy graphic language to reflect the idea of bringing coding into focus. An amazing meal had just been served and someone made the brave call for shots: the only issue was our lack of glasses. The group’s best effort at problem solving saw us downing alcohol from a just-finished vial of turmeric, and while that choice was less than ideal, a few months later when I was given the brief to design sustainable packaging, the evening came to mind.The result is a range of herbs and spices for young adults who love entertaining. Muddler’s packaging is infinitely recyclable and enjoyably reusable, each jar doubling as a shot glass. Simply pour your preferred alcohol into the just-finished jar to add a kick of aromatic flavour. Exploring the concept of being ‘all muddled up’, the design features altered type, free-form gradients, and organic shapes. Signature is inspired by the presence of the designer in their works, using hand generated details and metaphors of insertion to establish the typographer as a mediator between writers and readers.
